Media and Entertainment Entrepreneur and Private Investor
Mr. King's broadcasting career began in radio in 1967. From radio he moved into television with WPIX TV in NYC. Within two years he founded King World Productions in April 1972 as Chairman and CEO.
As founder of King World Productions, Bob King is recognized as one of the top executives in television history. King World Productions has produced legendary and extraordinary shows such as Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, The Price is Right, Hollywood Squares, The Jokers Wild, and Tic Tac Dough. Bob King was responsible for the syndication of the Oprah Winfrey Show and many of its progeny.
In 1982, King World formed an ad-sales barter division called Camelot Entertainment Sales. A year later, company chairmen, brothers Roger, Michael, and Robert acquired the syndication rights to Merv Griffin's game show Wheel of Fortune when no other studio would step in. The acquisition paid off, and Wheel became the most popular show in the history of syndication, and has continued to be for over a quarter of a century. At one point, the program was generating a 21% national rating.
The same year, the company also acquired the syndication rights of The Merv Griffin Show from Metromedia Producers Corporation. A year later, King World bought the syndication rights to another Griffin show, Jeopardy!, and the latest version of the series (with Alex Trebek) has since become the number-two show in syndication. Originally, the company produced two pilots of the game show; one in September 1983 and the other on January 9, 1984.
In 1984, he continued his entrepreneurialism by forming a new company, The Program Source, where he was President and CEO and was a 50%/50% partner with Columbia Pictures TV (a division of Coca Cola). In 1986, he merged that company into Columbia TV and became its President. When Columbia was sold to Sony, he became President of Orion TV from 1991 to 1994. He rejoined King World Productions during 1994, until the Company was sold to Viacom in 2000.
From 2000 until today, Bob has been an active private investor, avid card player, and most recently, is creating a worldwide amateur poker tournament production company.
